Pretty Little Flower: Crushing fury of bastardization

12/01/11  ||  The Duff

Pretty Little Flower are an American thrash/grindcore band hailing from Houston, Texas; they’ve been around for sometime now, this year marking just over their first decade as a band – I’m very surprised at this, as they seem to be little well known despite their drummer belonging to more popular underground extreme metal act Insect Warfare.

In true grind fashion, they’ve released ten or a thousand splits and demos (with bands such as Harmonized, Fist of Concrete Justice and Mesrine to name a few), but only a small number of full-length releases, “Crushing Fury of Bastardization” being their sophomore effort, if you can call it that when the twenty-four tracks (a standard grindcore CD length) is reduced to thirteen comprising new material followed by four of lesser sheen but still high value production (don’t know why, and I researched the shit out of it), the final seven being live tracks recorded with early grind demo quality.

Honestly, I know very little of grind, and the grind I do enjoy is not of the butt-ugly variety that harbors a lust for crust punk and throwing bottles at the bass-player’s head; I wouldn’t say that Pretty Little Flower are much of this ilk, being as they are quite prone to hardcore and thrash worship more than most extreme metal bands politically inclined while throwing handfuls of short outbursts to the listener, but there is that attitude definitely that comes from a sub-culture I can only spurn for its grime-fueled outlook.

Some of you will dig this though, I’m sure; my hunch being fans of Insect Warfare, Kill the Client and such, people who snicker inwardly when someone says Origin are grind “You DUMB TWAT THEY’ER DAATH METAL!!”. There is an appeal to dirty, ugly and little thought-provoking other than how wildly assembled the music is, I’m sure, but I’ve yet to find it personally. Don’t expect to like this if you want a CD to have a beginning, middle and an end, but for the temperamental animal within you, this short burst of savagery might be just what you’re looking for.
